Overview
Inland Forest Management Inc., an F & W Forestry company, is seeking to fill a full-time position to assist with all aspects of maintaining and deploying the company’s wildfire engines. In addition, there are opportunities to develop and/or expand upon forest technician skills.
Responsibilities
Primary:
- Assist with the building and maintenance of wildland engines
- Assist with dispatching of engines
- Serve as an engine boss
- Assist with paperwork associated with wildfire suppression operations
- Assist with annual and basic wildland firefighter training
Secondary:
- Assist with management of hazardous fuels treatment programs
- Perform duties associated with forest technician responsibilities including flagging out harvest units, forest inventory, tree marking, tree planting, etc.
Requirements
Essential Characteristics
- Engine boss qualified, or a fire fighter 1 qualification and near achieving EB qualification
- Strong communication skills
- Mechanical aptitude
- Extremely safety conscious
- A drive to promote a positive working environment, self-motivated, attention to detail and problem-solving skills
- Possess an insurable driving record
- Willing to locate to the general Sandpoint, Idaho area
Physical Requirements
- Pass the arduous duty forest service pack test, which requires the ability to carry 45 pounds on flat terrain for 3 miles within 45 minutes.
- Lift and carry more than 50 pounds.
- Walk and/or climb extensively in challenging outdoor work conditions.
- Drive or ride for many hours.
Desirable Characteristics, But Not Required
- Technical forestry skills such as timber cruising, tree marking, harvest unit flagging, stocking surveys, planting inspection, etc.
- Ability to navigate using cell phone or mapping applications
- Experience using a chainsaw and road clearing
- A background working mechanically on vehicles
- Supervision of personnel experience
- Basic knowledge of Microsoft software programs
Essential Functions
- Applicants must be interested in wildfire and comfortable with fulfilling two-week wildfire assignments
- Working on maintaining and building wildfire engines
- Communicating with company personnel and agency employees regarding wildfire suppression
- Must be able to work independently as well as part of a crew and be able to prioritize/schedule projects
Compensation
- This is a non-exempt position paying competitive wages, depending on experience, and eligible for overtime
