Silviculture Regen Forester
Job Summary
FWS Forestry California, LLC, the California subsidiary of F&W Forestry, is seeking to fill the Regen Forester position to manage the reforestation, site preparation, vegetation spray and pre-commercial thinning for 168,000 acres of privately held timberlands.
Responsibilities
- Plans and implements the silviculture program to effectively establish and manage conifer plantations.
- Manages the vegetation management program including the identification of plantations that require treatment and prescribing the appropriate herbicide treatments.
- Administers the pre-commercial thinning program by identifying candidate stands for thinning and maintaining the appropriate residual trees-per-acre.
- Prepare and administer contracts for reforestation activities such as tree planting, vegetation management, site preparation, and thinning.
- Provides advice, technical support, and evaluation of proposed and ongoing project plans for silvicultural methods and techniques in planting, seeding, site preparation, timber stand improvement, and tree improvement projects.
- Maintain documentation electronically of all silvicultural activities and coordinate with the GIS manager to ensure silvicultural treatments tracked.
- Assists with including layout of herbicide treatment areas, pre-commercial thinning and reforestation.
Requirements
- Associate’s or bachelor’s degree in Forestry, natural resources or related field is preferred.
o Candidates without degrees, but with adequate field experience, are encouraged to apply. - A minimum of three (3) years of field experience and at least one (1) year in silviculture.
- RPF and PCA license preferred or willingness to pursue both designations.
- Experience with or sufficient demonstrable understanding of navigation techniques including topographic maps, GPS, compass, and/or PLSS systems.
- Possess California Pest Control Advisors license or willingness to take exam.
- Experience with GIS preferably ArcGIS Pro software.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Must be able to adhere to company safety protocols.
- Candidates must be able to hike, sometimes traveling long distances, along closed roads or trails, often in steep, brushy terrain.
- Must be comfortable working in all weather conditions with the possibility of encountering (potentially dangerous) wildlife and vegetation.
- Candidates must be able to confidently, safely, and efficiently navigate logging roads with a 4WD vehicle or ATV in areas with little or no cell phone reception.
- Must be able to work independently and alone in the field.
- Self-motivation, attention to detail, excellent communication skills, and problem-solving skills are essential.
Essential Functions
- Applicants must be able to work independently in a variety of potentially hazardous circumstances and areas in inclement and cold weather and often in areas without cell service.
- Applicants should have a working knowledge of Microsoft Excel and must be able to navigate in the field using a smartphone and mapping application.
- Experience using a chainsaw and road clearing is a plus.
- Ability to speak and write clearly and effectively, and the ability to communicate in Spanish is a plus.
Salary & Benefits
Pay is based on education, experience and qualifications, and includes overtime with a range of $66,560.00 – $80,000.00. Travel on the job is paid both ways. Benefits include medical, dental, vision, life insurance, 10 holidays, vacation, and 401k with 4% employer match are available to regular full-time employees.
